Dominik Szoboszlai’s national team coach, Marco Rossi, explained how he tries to get the best out of Liverpool’s Hungarian in his team.
Aged just 22, Szoboszlai was named captain of his country in November 2022 following the retirement of Adam Szalai and a long-term injury to Peter Gulacsi.
He has since helped Hungary finish top of their qualifying group to qualify for Euro 2024, where they will play Switzerland, Scotland and hosts Germany in the group stage.
His coach, Rossi, saw Szoboszlai excel for the team and explained the role he allows the midfielder.
?? Marco Rossi explains Dominik Szoboszlai’s role in Hungary’s system here.
I have seen so many claims that he plays on the wing or more for Hungary.
That’s simply not true. He has a free role. In some games, you’ll see him play a lot deeper than he does #LFC.

The manager told reporters, including Nemzeti Sport: “I think that in our team Dominik is recognized as a team leader, not only because of the captain, but especially because of his skills, because of his position on the field.
“We play a kind of football, we can say less positioned and more relational, and Dominik is a player who, like many others, can freely go where he feels he can.
“He’s a lot freer to move all over the field and that gives him more responsibility, but he’s able to hold this kind of responsibility.
“He is not obliged to play on the right side on the left side, he can move all over the field. And I think in our team this is a huge advantage.”
For Liverpool this season, Szoboszlai has played as a box-to-box midfielder, usually on the right. This included him getting past Mo Salah as well as coming back to help Trent Alexander-Arnold.
After signing from RB Leipzig last summer, the Hungarian started in red. However, as the season progressed, he ran out of steam.
This is something that Arne Slott will need to ensure is not an issue at the start of the campaign, especially with Szoboszlai taking on a lot of responsibility while at the Euros.
He will be hoping to make an impact on the international stage this summer, having missed Euro 2020 through injury and failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
Should Hungary go out in the first stage, Soboszlai would return to pre-season in time for Liverpool’s three friendlies in the United States.
