SANDY, Utah (Sunday, June 2, 2024) – Real monarchs (2-7-1, 8 points, 13 West) comes away with a 4-0 win over Austin FC II (2-4-3, 10 points, 11 West) with two first-half goals and two in the second half.
Both teams started slowly and without moving on the field. They were patient and took their time with each touch. Each play started with the backline before the defenders looked to link up along the touchline. Monarch had most of the ball to start and had a shot from the top of the box Bertin Jacquesson to give them their first real opportunity in front of the net. This shot went high over the crossbar but gave the players their first glimpse of the victory to come.
The first goal of the match was scored by the Monarchs in the 22nd minute. The game started from a cross from Tommy Silva on the far side of the field. Silva found Jacquesson alone on the opposite line, which allowed the Monarchs to organize in Austin’s box. Jacquesson made a short pass to him Noel Caliskan to the nearby goal post which was then able to connect to an entry Matthew Bell. Bell put the ball down and hard past goalkeeper Aaron Cervantes from the six yard box. The combination gave Caliskan his team-leading fourth assist of the year and tied Bell for the most goals among the Monarchs with second in the 2024 season.
In the 36th minute, Real Monarchs extended their lead with an impressive goal Fidel Barajas. Jacquesson assisted on this goal as well, finding Barajas on the far line, with only one defender in front of him. Barajas took a few touches to shake off his defender and unleashed a shot from the top of the box. The ball hit the crossbar at just the right angle for the ball to go straight into the net, giving the Monarchs a safety for the game.
Austin FC 2 had some small breakaways towards the final third but could not capitalize due to Omar Alba, Keller StorlieAND Fernando Delgado handling attacks. The half ended with the Monarchs holding the advantage and feeling energized to extend the goal difference.
The second half began as the first half ended: Monarchs in possession and creating chances. They had some personnel changes to start the half. The fresh legs made a significant difference as they looked towards goal again. Damien Barker John had some notable hits and contributions in the game while Daron Iskenderian found the first goal of the second half.
The game began with Jacquesson dribbling towards the goal line, parallel to the 18-yard box, and battling against his defender Anthony De Anda. Jacquesson narrowly escaped De Anda with a near-byline fake and sent it low and hard across the box to an oncoming Iskenderian. Iskenderian, with his defender close on his heels, took a sliding touch to find the net, completely avoiding Cervantes, in the 57th minute of the game.
The final finish to the game came shortly after a scuffle in Austin’s box. Izzy Amparo took the ball off an Austin breakaway attempt. Amparo took a touch past his defender before firing it into the gloves of a diving Cervantes. Cervantes got enough of the shot to turn it into the six-yard box, but Bell was there, waiting for the shot. Bell took advantage of Cervantes’ ground position and made a quick shot in the near corner to end the game. It was Bell’s second goal of the game and earned him the position of the Monarchs’ current leading scorer.
After the Monarchs’ fourth goal, they focused on settling down the game, taking their time and being deliberate with their passing. For the last 20 minutes they were able to keep the ball out of Austin’s feet and came away with a 4-0 win and 3 points on the day.
SLC: Matthew Bell (Noel Caliskan) 22′: As Silva’s cross from the left wing sailed over a crowded ATX2 box in the 22nd minute, it settled at the feet of Jacquesson for a rebound on the right side of the attacking third. Seeing Caliskan’s darting run, he played a smart ball into the area where Caliskan ran, shielding it from his defender with physical play before passing to Matthew Bell in the center of the box for the point-blank finish.
SLC: Fidel Barajas (Bertin Jacquesson) 36′: With Jacquesson still playing on the right side of Austin’s box, he calmly made a break for Barajas who was running parallel to goal. Joking before diving down the left, the 18-year-old winger curled a perfectly struck ball around his marker and over the helpless glove of Anthony De Anda in his attempt to connect with the woodwork and to lower the rod to the back of the net.
SLC: Daron Iskenderian (Bertin Jacquesson) 57′: Taking a ball from the backline over the top, Jacquesson wins a 50/50 header over the ATX defender, then proceeds to drive the ball to the right side of the pitch at the 18. With one touch, Jacquesson baits the ATX defender into thinking that it was getting in before Jacquesson cut the drive out to six and played a ball finding Iskenderian at the far post for a tap-in.
SLC: Matthew Bell (Unassisted) 69′: Recovering from a chipped cross, Tommy Silva takes the ball into the top left corner of the box, plays a ball to Izzy Amparo, who takes a touch before firing past the far post. After handling the ball, the ATX goalkeeper puts the ball back into play, where Bell cleans up the mess with a late kick.
