Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy has reportedly presented himself as a candidate for Burnley’s vacant managerial position.
Van Nistelrooy has been out of work since leaving Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven in May 2023.
He did well at PSV as he led the team to win both the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield. However, differences between him and the club’s bosses eventually led to his departure.
Since then, Van Nistelrooy has been linked with a number of sides, with the former striker admitting he still wants to take the reins at a team in Spain or England.
Newly promoted Leicester City – who have just lost their manager Enzo Maresca to Chelsea – have been mentioned as a potential destination for Van Nistelrooy.
The Sun’s Alan Nixon has now revealed that the 47-year-old has “put his name in” to become the next Burnley boss.

The Clarets were relegated to the second tier of English football after finishing 19th in the just-completed 2023/24 season.
Burnley managed just 24 points as they won five, drew nine and lost 24.
Their gaffer, Vincent Kompany, then left Turf Moor to pull off a shock move to the Bundesliga and take the hot seat at Bayern Munich.
Some of the other managers Burnley are considering appointing are Frank Lampard, Craig Bellamy, Scott Parker and Steve Cooper.
However, of all these options, Van Nistelrooy is the one that stands out. As well as being a proven winner as both a player and a manager, the former United Kingdom player has a very impressive footballing philosophy.
In PSV, he changed formations 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 depending on the position and level of opposition. If necessary, he also used a 4-4-2 formation to great effect.
His style of play required his side to be pragmatic, compact and solid defensively out of possession. Offensively, he coached his players to prioritize dominating the game by moving the ball high up the field through gaps, mostly using the wings.
