After a 2-0 loss against the Portland Timbers on Wednesday night, Austin quickly turns his attention to an opportunity to bounce back against RSL. Despite the loss, Austin is 6-2-3 in its last 11 games and finds itself at 5th spot in the Western Conference as the midseason looms Saturday.
Last season, the Verde & Black earned a 2-1 win on the road against RSL thanks to goals from Owen Wolff and Jon Gallagher. Austin fans will also fondly remember the playoff meeting between the two sides, in which ATXFC prevailed in a penalty shootout for the Club’s first postseason victory.
Although the RSL game is the third in eight days for the Verde & Black, the team has two weeks off before their next game on June 15, making the three points all the more valuable to keep the momentum going during the break.
Real Salt Lake is currently in first place in the MLS Western Conference with an 8-6-2 record. RSL is coming off a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders at Lumen Field on Wednesday night. Their only goal came from Andrés Gómez in the ninth minute of second-half stoppage time.
That late equalizer marks the third straight game in which RSL have come back to win or draw. RSL’s 30 points are the most in club history through the first 16 games of a season.
RSL captain Chicho Arango has 13 goals and eight assists and is leading the MLS Golden Boot race. As a team, Salt Lake’s 31 goals are the second most in MLS, behind only Inter Miami. The team is on a 12-game unbeaten run entering Saturday’s game and it will be up to the Verde & Black to find a way to end that streak.
