Manchester United’s Danish duo Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen are seen as having a huge impact on Denmark at Euro 2024 due to their connection at club level.

The Scandinavian players had the opposite luck this year where Rasmus Hojlund greatly established himself as the first striker at his boyhood club and was the team’s top scorer with 16 goals.

However, Christian Eriksen saw a reduced role at United where he barely played compared to his first season at Old Trafford.

Both players will represent their nation at Euro 2024, aiming to take Denmark one step further than their impressive run to the semi-finals in 2021.

Danish assistant Morten Wieghorst told Reuters (via ESPN) that the United duo could have a fruitful combination thanks to spending so much time together at club level.

He said that the Danes will “try to use those relationships that the players can have from the situation at the club” because it is “always useful, especially when we are talking about big players like Christian and Rasmus”.

The coach then stated that it was something that not only this generation would try to exploit, but that it was a trademark of every successful Danish team.

“Historically, it was a key point for Denmark as well. In our great Danish team of the 80s, we had players who played together at Ajax, at Anderlecht, clubs like that where players played at a high level.”

“They played together and brought those relationships back to the national team, which is a great thing. Even in the team that won Euro 1992 we had seven or eight players who were linked to Brondby, and that is something that can be used.”

Wieghorst also heaped more praise on Eriksen after he received some criticism from some quarters of the Danish media for his inclusion in the squad, particularly from former Real Madrid player Thomas Gravesen.

“Eriksen is still a fantastic player and has experience. We have to remember that going into the Euros and the finals in general, having players who have already been there and done that and tried everything is very important.”

The United duo face their first test on Sunday against Slovenia before the big group clash against England on Thursday next week.
