VENTURA, California (Kyodo) — Paris Olympics-bound Liz Akama claimed silver Saturday as Japan swept the women’s street skateboarding podium at the X Games in Ventura, California.

Miyu Ito won gold after scoring 88.66 for her best of three runs in the final. She was three points clear of Akama, with world champion Yumeka Oda finishing 4.66 points off the lead for bronze.

The same trio also swept the medals in the women’s street best trick competition, with Oda winning gold, Ito taking silver and Akama bronze.

The X Games was Akama’s last competition before the Olympics.

“I think I gained a bit of confidence heading into the Paris Olympics, but I couldn’t win the title. I need to practice more,” the 15-year-old said.

Both Ito and Oda missed out in a hotly contested battle for Japanese Olympic team selection finalized earlier in June.

In a further sign of Japan’s depth in the sport, Ibuki Matsumoto finished fourth and Hina Maeda seventh in the eight-woman street final in Ventura.
