Manchester United Champions League winners Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves have shared a rather embarrassing story from their playing days at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand represented the Red Devils 455 times over 12 seasons, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
Hargreaves signed for the club in 2007 from Bayern Munich and despite having three of his four seasons at the club ruined by injury, he played a pivotal role in his debut season when United won the Premier League and Champions League double.
Speaking on Ferdinand’s Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel, the former United defender told a hilarious story about the time Hargreaves met Canadian rapper Drake.
The 37 year old is one of the biggest names in modern music and like many celebrities is said to be a fan of United.
The encounter took place during the 2007-2008 season while Drake was paying a visit to the Manchester United squad at their training ground.
Ferdinand explained, “[I told Hargreaves] ‘Come out, I need you to meet this guy, man’. He [Hargreaves] came out all wet dripping, hair all over. Drake is standing there [and] my guy [Hargreaves] is standing there with the fruit and veg out, as you do.”
Hargreaves confirmed the awkward moment stating, “so he’s [Ferdinand] called me. He said, ‘Oh, come out. I want you to meet somebody’. So I can’t see, all I can do is hear him.”
“So I come out, Rio’s there, I look around the corner, I see this guy and I think, ‘Is that Drake?’ … He’s there with his 10 homies or whatever, and there’s me. All I got is sliders on and my towel over my arm.”
“And he [Ferdinand] says to me, ‘It’s Drake’. And I say, ‘I know who it is’. And his homies were looking at me like, ‘What’s going on here?’”
Drake is also an avid lover of basketball as he is the Global Ambassador for the NBA side, the Toronto Raptors.
However, the musician is not always seen in the best light by football fans as he has had many photos posted on social media of him in a variety of different football kits and in fact there is a tongue-in-cheek rumour that “the Drake Curse” exists.
This is due to the fact the rapper has had photos taken of himself with various players like Jadon Sancho while at Borussia Dortmund and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang when at Arsenal, and after the image has been posted on social media, their sides have gone on to lose huge games shortly after.
United famously tried to take advantage of this when they posted an image of Drake wearing a Barcelona shirt in 2019 when they took on the Spanish giants in the quarter final of the Champions League but sadly no bad luck was brought for the Spaniards as they ran out comfortable 3-0 winners.
