Manchester United did well to replace Raphael Varane by bringing in highly-rated French centre-back Leny Yoro from Lille earlier this summer.

However, United are still light at the back, as they have also sold Willy Kambwala to Villarreal this summer. Now, an injury blow to Yoro, who was subbed off in the first half of the friendly clash against Arsenal, has further underlined the need for more reinforcements.

The Red Devils’ left-back position is also a cause of concern amid uncertainty over Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness.

Recently, The Peoples Person covered a report claiming Feyenoord star Dávid Hancko is on their short-list of targets.

The fact that Hancko is capable of playing as a central defender as well as a left-back makes him a very attractive option this summer, as United’s financial position is not strong enough, due to the Premier League’s PSR rules, to address all areas of concern with quality additions.

However, United seemingly face a serious challenge for Hancko as reports in Spain suggest Atletico Madrid have stepped up their efforts to sign the Slovakia international.

Diego Simeone’s side are in the market for two centre-backs following the exits of Mario Hermoso, Gabriel Paulista, and Stefan Savić.

According to the Spanish outlet AS,  Atletico have made an offer, including bonuses, to reach Feyenoord’s asking price of €30 million.

Hancko, who enjoyed a promising Euros with his national team this summer, is coveted by Atletico for his physicality, defensive ability, and versatility.

The 26-year-old is seen as a “guaranteed replacement” for Hermoso.

There has not been any concrete report of United making any offer for the Feyenoord centre-back. Considering Atletico have already made their move, the Red Devils need to intensify their pursuit if they are seriously interested in Hancko.

As far as centre-back targets are concerned, United are also linked with Matthijs de Ligt, having reportedly already seen their €35 million bid turned down by Bayern Munich.
