Austin FC II won the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro Invitational on Saturday night at Parmer Field in St. Louis. David’s Performance Center, beating Liga de Expansión MX side Cancún FC 2-1. The win makes ATXFC II the first MLSNP team to beat a team from Mexico. Both of Austin’s goals came from set pieces, with Micah Burton and Alonso Ramírez providing the final touches off assists from CJ Fodrey.
Burton gave the hosts an early lead with an eighth-minute header. Cheick Touré took a free-kick into the box which Fodrey headed against the crossbar to find Burton and open the scoring. At the other end of the first half, Ramírez cleverly flicked a corner kick from Fodrey to elude his man and fire home from close range, doubling Austin’s advantage.
