Manchester United fans may have to wait another two months to see Tyrell Malacia in action, as the left-back continues to work on his recovery.
Malacia was Erik ten Hag’s first signing at United, brought in to challenge Luke Shaw. In his maiden season, he did show some signs of establishing himself as an able cover for the Englishman, delivering several promising performances and impressing with his defensive acumen.
However, akin to Shaw, the Netherlands international also found himself struggling with injury, having spent more time on the sidelines rather than on the pitch during his time in England.
The 24-year-old former Feyenoord talent has not featured for the Red Devils since May 2023, having undergone two rounds of knee surgery.
Malacia was initially expected to be available in January, however, he suffered a setback and failed to play a single minute during the 2023/24 campaign.
He is not involved in this summer’s pre-season tour either; instead, he is continuing his rehabilitation at the club’s Carrington training complex.
It has been 14 months since Malacia covered United’s left flank, and according to Ten Hag, he is still two months away from making a comeback.
The United gaffer said (via The Manchester Evening News): “He is now in a good place but he is not here because I only took players who could play games or be available for team training.”
“He is not that far, but he is now in a progress situation. At a relatively short notice, he can again return into team training and then into team performance in games. I think it would be possible (for Malacia to return) in two months.”
With Shaw also on extended break due to his involvement in the Euros, United are having to rely on Harry Amass to play at left-back this summer.
Impressively, the United academy talent has instantly raised eyebrows with his technical ability and spatial awareness. In particular, his assist for Amad Diallo’s goal against Real Betis highlighted just how talented he is.
Shaw is most likely to keep hold of the starting spot. However, if Amass continues to perform like this, Malacia might find himself relegated to United’s third-choice left-back upon his return to full fitness.
