Erik ten Hag says he is grateful to Mitchell van der Gaag for what he did at Manchester United.
Van der Gaag left his post as assistant manager this summer, with reports suggesting Ineos had removed him because he was not popular with the players.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Ten Hag was asked if it was hard to let his friend go.
“Very grateful for what he did for us, but he wants to go,” he replied.
“Already he wants to be head coach, same as with Steve McClaren.
“This is good but also for our process it’s good. To go again to the next level, we need new ideas, new energy, new dynamics.
“It will help us to energise the team, to bring the team to the next level.”
Van der Gaag has not yet found a club to take him on as manager.
However, he does have extensive experience in the role.
He has previously managed Portuguese sides Belenenses and Maritimo, Cypriot side Ermis Aradippou and Dutch side, FC Eindhoven.
McClaren, on the other hand, reportedly left United because he felt he had been pushed down the coaching pecking order at the club.
He walked straight into a managerial role as he has been appointed head coach of the Jamaica national team.
The pair’s replacements, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake, both took a step back from managerial work to join Ineos’ team.
Van Nistelrooy had been favourite to land the vacant job as Burnley manager, while Hake was manager of Go Ahead Eagles.
