Manchester United are reportedly prepared to ditch their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, with an agreement over the transfer fee proving difficult to find.

United have already strengthened their defensive department through the addition of Leny Yoro to the ranks but it’s believed that Erik ten Hag’s side want at least one more centre-back, a need that was made even more urgent after Yoro sustained an injury that is expected to keep him sidelined for around three months.

At the moment, United’s top target appears to be De Ligt. Talks have been ongoing for a number of weeks with Bayern over a transfer to Old Trafford for the Netherlands international.

There is an agreement in place over personal terms between the Red Devils and De Ligt’s camp, with the player keen on a reunion in England with Ten Hag.

Earlier this month, United lodged a joint bid for De Ligt and his teammate Noussair Mazraoui but it was swiftly rejected by Bayern, who are holding out for a much higher sum.

A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United were poised to return with a fresh offer for De Ligt and Mazraoui, with the Premier League giants “increasingly confident” of landing the pair.

However, according to GIVEMESPORT, United are now contemplating abandoning their chase for De Ligt amidst Bayern’s unwillingness to reach a compromise.

“Manchester United are threatening to walk away from negotiations with Bayern Munich as they will not entertain bowing to the Bundesliga giants’ demands for Matthijs de Ligt in the coming days despite being determined to lure the centre-back to Old Trafford, GIVEMESPORT sources have revealed.”

“Manchester United are seriously considering ending discussions over a move for de Ligt, according to GMS sources, as it has been decided that they will continue refusing to meet Bayern Munich’s £43million demands despite the German heavyweights expecting his suitors to edge closer to their valuation this week.”

“GMS sources have been informed that Manchester United are adamant that they have made fair advances for de Ligt, who would provide further cover in Yoro’s absence, as they are aware that he is not at the forefront of new Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany’s plans and they want to get his wages off the books.”

United are adamant that their £30million valuation of De Ligt is fair and they will not go above this figure.

The 20-time English champions have already demonstrated that they will not be held to ransom for their targets. United cooled their interest in top midfield target Manuel Ugarte after baulking at Paris Saint-Germain’s demands for the Uruguayan.
