Manchester United’s hunt for a defensive midfielder has not gone according to plan so far and it could get worse if latest reports are to be believed.

Casemiro’s form last season was concerning and the Brazilian struggled in pre-season as well and it is clear that INEOS need to find a replacement for the ageing star.

Manuel Ugarte’s asking price has proved to be beyond United’s reach, especially considering United’s inability to move the former Real Madrid superstar on.

Alternatives are currently being eyed which includes the likes of Sander Berge and Youssouf Fofana but so far, no deal has been agreed.

CDM options

Last season, the Red Devils had decided to bring in Sofyan Amrabat on loan but the Moroccan struggled due to a variety of factors and he was ultimately not signed permanently.

United are still reluctant to spend big on the Fiorentina star and are eyeing another loan with the midfielder keen on reuniting with Erik ten Hag despite a disappointing last season.

But as per HITC Football, the Morocco international is now open to joining Fenerbahce, currently managed by former United manager Jose Mourinho.

It was earlier reported that the 27-year-old would reject the Turkish side’s advances should United come calling. But with time running out, the player is warming up to the idea of plying his trade in Turkey.

Playing under an iconic manager would be enticing and unless the 20-time English league champions act fast, they could end up missing out on their backup option.

Set to miss out on Amrabat also

“Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is still keen to seal a return to the Premier League with Manchester United but he is now also open to the idea of joining Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce too.

“Amrabat is still holding out hope that Man United will come calling again, a player who also worked under Erik ten Hag at FC Utrecht is also opening up the door to alternative destinations. HITC have been told that Fenerbahce are in talks and are ready to offer Amrabat a deal.

“Now under the stewardship of former Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho, the 27-year-old would accept the chance to play under one of the most decorated head coaches in football history should a contract come his way from Istanbul.”

United are running out of time to find a few stop-gap solutions as well and the team currently looks in worse shape in the middle of the park as compared to last season.
