Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has confirmed that he had offers to leave the club this summer.

Over the weekend, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that United had reached an agreement with Fernandes over fresh terms to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Earlier this summer, there was plenty of speculation around the playmaker’s future at United amidst links to the Saudi Pro League and elite European outfits such as Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Barcelona.

On Wednesday evening, United officially announced that their skipper had put pen to paper on a new contract until 30 June 2027. There is the option of retaining him for an additional twelve months.

Fernandes expressed his passion and love for United as he indicated that he was ultimately convinced by the club’s desire to fight for major trophies in the coming years.

The Portugal international also spoke to ESPN and relayed that he was approached to leave United but he elected to remain loyal to the 20-time English champions.

He told the newspaper, “Obviously (it’s a show of confidence). It was a huge change for me to go from Portugal to the Premier League. The competition here is very high in terms of the quality of players, I had to show that I deserved to be here.”

“Over the years, I think I’ve done very well, there’s still some room for improvement. But at the same time, this vote of confidence from the club was very important for me.”

“Also because I was approached (by other teams), the club was aware that there was a possibility of me leaving, I had concrete proposals. But the club showed that they needed me, that they were in a moment of change and that they wanted to do things differently.”

“And I believe that there is a dream future at this club with the changes that are happening. My decision to stay comes from that. There were other directions that would be interesting for me, they would be different types of expectations.”

He added, “But I feel good here, I feel loved and I feel that the club has been very respectful towards me. It was a very family-friendly choice, because my family feels very good here, we feel at home. And I think there is nothing better than feeling at home, especially feeling appreciated by the club, by the fans, by your teammates.”

“It is something that is very difficult to achieve in football. I think that I have managed to achieve this so far and I think that I still have a lot to give to this club. For everything that the club has done for me and made me become, I think I can still give something more.”

Fernandes has scored 79 goals and registered 67 assists in his 234 appearances for the Reds since arriving in January 2020.
