Scott McTominay’s future has become inextricably linked with that of another former Manchester United player, Romelu Lukaku.

The academy graduate is seen as expendable at United if any club is able to meet the £25 million (€30 million) asking price Ineos have attached to him.

So far, Fulham have come the closest, offering £20 million earlier in the summer. But despite a flurry of activity from various clubs, including José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, no-one has reached the magic number.

Reports last week claimed that Napoli are leading the chase now and have made McTominay their priority. Furthermore, the Scot is claimed to want the move and his agents have put discussions with all other clubs on hold.

The problem is that Napoli need to sell before they can buy.

Their biggest saleable asset and a player who has been promised he can leave this summer is Victor Osimhen. He is being chased by Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, but neither club have, as yet, put a solid bid on the table.

To complicate matters further, Napoli want a Chelsea player, Lukaku, to replace Osimhen should he depart.

According to this morning’s paper edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, “in addition to the new rumours about Ivan Martin of Girona, Samu Omorodion (Atletico Madrid) and Leon Goretzka of Bayern Munich, for Napoli the absolute priority remains the Lukaku affair.

“There was still no opening as of yesterday from Chelsea to the overall offer of around thirty million for Lukaku’s contract (between fixed and variable parts), still considered too far from the 43 million that are the figure established for the Big Rom clause.

“The Osimhen situation does not help, as he is not willing to meet the needs of Napoli, who would like to obtain the resources from his transfer to complete the incoming market.

“The Nigerian has promised himself to PSG (who remain on the sidelines waiting for news), while Chelsea could only think of him on loan.”

PSG are becoming something of a bottleneck in this summer’s market, especially where it concerns United.

They have thus far failed to negotiate a deal over United target Manuel Ugarte, and now their hesitation in bidding for Osimhen has led to Napoli’s inability to move for McTominay, especially while the final fee for both Osimhen and Lukaku remain unresolved.

It’s a complex situation that could go down to the wire as 12 days remain in this summer’s transfer window. That will not help United if it does not give them sufficient time to replace the academy graduate.
