PSV Eindhoven have started to look elsewhere for a new left-back amid frustration over Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia’s fitness.
Malacia, who moved to United in the summer of 2022 from Feyenoord, had a promising start to his career in England. At one point, it appeared United had managed to find a very reliable left-back to replace the injury-prone Luke Shaw.
However, in the last 14 months, it is the Dutchman’s fitness that has left United’s plans concerning the left-back position in limbo.
Now a report from Soccer News (via Sport Witness) suggests Malacia’s injury issues have also impacted PSV’s transfer plans.
It is claimed that the Eredivisie champions considered the Netherlands international as one of their targets. However, they have now “abandoned” their plan to make any attempt to bring the player back to his home country.
Initially, their pursuit had moved forward as Malacia appeared as a potential option to strengthen the position.
But upon learning about his fitness worries, PSV “completely discarded” the idea. They are now exploring the transfer market for other options.
The outlet have suggested that the situation of Malacia, who has not played for United since May 2023, can be labelled as “crazy.”
The 25-year-old still remains on the sidelines. Earlier this month, Erik ten Hag revealed he expects his first United signing to return to action in “two months”.
The start of the new season has certainly been tricky for the Dutch gaffer, who has had to deal with the absence of both of his senior left-backs.
In the Community Shield at Wembley, Ten Hag opted to push Lisandro Martinez out on the left flank. Meanwhile, in his side’s Premier League opener, he started Diogo Dalot on the left side, handing his right-back spot to new arrival Noussair Mazraoui instead.
Regardless, The Peoples Person recently relayed a report claiming this selection headache is not going to push United into signing a new left-back this summer.
Despite an initial willingness to address the area, the club’s hierarchy have now “decided against pursuing a left-back.”
