Former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood is reportedly in the process of changing his international allegiance to Jamaica from England.

Greenwood last played for England – his only cap – four years ago and according to The Sun, he is pushing to play under Steve McClaren, who parted ways with United earlier this summer.

The 22-year-old featured for the Three Lions in 2020 when he came on as a late substitute during a UEFA Nations League clash with Iceland.

The newspaper reports, “SunSport has learned that the FA have been approached by the Jamaican Football Federation with a formal request to transfer Greenwood’s international registration, and the process is already underway.”

“Jamaica first tried to get Greenwood to switch his international allegiance after the criminal charges were dropped last February, which he initially declined as he wanted to revive his career with England.”

“McClaren’s appointment as manager of the Reggae Boyz earlier this month is understood to have led to a renewed approach to Greenwood, which appears to have been successful.”

Matt Hughes explains that McClaren – who knows Greenwood well from their time together at Old Trafford – played a significant role in persuading the forward to play for Jamaica going forward.

The FA have handed over the paperwork to the Jamaican Football Federation. The latter will now submit a request for international registration to FIFA for approval.

It’s unlikely that FIFA will bar the switch because their rules permit such if a player has made not more than three competitive senior appearances before the age of 21.

When this move gets over the line, Greenwood will have the chance to play in the 2026 World Cup in the colours of Jamaica.

It’s important to note that his eligibility to line up for Jamaica comes from his father, Andrew.

Greenwood was sold by United to Marseille a few weeks ago and got off to the perfect start to life in France as he registered a brace during his Ligue 1 debut last weekend.
