Bayern Munich’s new coach Vincent Kompany praised his team’s mentality after they came from behind to beat Wolfsburg in their Bundesliga opener on Sunday.
Serge Gnabry scored in the 82nd minute to lead the German champions to a 3-2 win over Wolfsburg and give Kompany, who replaced Thomas Tuchel after a disappointing third-place finish last season, a winning start in the Bundesliga.
Bayern took the lead through Jamal Musiala in the 19th minute but started the second half in shocking fashion, giving away a penalty seconds after play resumed and committing a defensive error that put the home side ahead.
But Gnabry and Harry Kane combined to score the winner in the last moments and secure the three points for Bayern.
“I enjoyed the game, it was my first game in the Bundesliga as a manager,” said former Burnley manager Kompany after the match.
“The first half was as dominant as it should be. We didn’t allow any chances. The second half wasn’t good at the start, as we conceded two quick goals. The third point is that our mentality was good at the end, and that’s why we won the game.”
“Mistakes happen, and the important thing is how the team reacts. It took a while in the second half. Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman came on with the right mentality and the rhythm was back.
“At the end of the second half, we had a lot of courage to win the game. It wasn’t perfect, but we’ll keep working.”
Joshua Kimmich said Bayern’s reaction was good in the second half.
“The game was very difficult, the pitch was very dry, so the game stopped sometimes. Maybe the game was not always good. But in the end I am happy that we won. The mentality was right,” said the German international.
Bayern host Freiburg in the next round of the German league in a week.
