AC Milan are chasing Manchester United free agent target Adrien Rabiot in the last days of the window.
The French midfielder has been linked to the Red Devils ever since Erik ten Hag became manager and the club even agreed a deal with Juventus for the transfer of the player back in 2022.
Nonetheless, United could not agree a financial package with the Frenchman and the deal eventually fell apart.
The Red Devils have been tentatively linked to the former Juventus man this summer but look close to completing a deal for midfield general Manuel Ugarte after having a fee agreed with Paris Saint-Germain yesterday.
Despite this, United could still perhaps show an interest in doing a deal for Rabiot as they have been labelled as being in “pole position” to sign the 29 year old and it has been claimed that he would prioritise a move to United over arch-rivals Liverpool if given the choice.
Reports in Italy suggest that it is not the Premier League side but in fact AC Milan that are currently pushing the hardest to get a deal done with the French international.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report that due to Milan’s messy start to the season, it “turns out now that the Rabiot option for the Rossoneri exists, even if with a limited success rate, and a whole series of obstacles to overcome.”
There is no rush as free agents can sign after the window closes. He is also familiar with Serie A and the Champions League and the Italian giants want him to be a “leader” and an “organizer” for the Milan side, as well as another “big name” to add to their collection.
However the “obstacles” arise with his salary, which was €7.5 million net last season, which works out at about £122,000 a week. The issue is that he would want “an even more rewarding project, that is, an even richer contract. It is his mother Veronique who is in charge of the negotiations and so far has not given discounts to anyone.”
Milan would also have to sell Ismaël Bennacer to make room in the squad and for wage savings.
Whilst serious links to Rabiot have dried up as of late, United would certainly not have the same issues as Milan in paying his salary.
If United were to sell Christian Eriksen before the end of the window, with the sales of Scott McTominay and Hannibal Mejbri, perhaps they may deem it necessary to go back into the market for a midfielder and the advantage of pursuing Rabiot is that a deal can be struck after the window closes this Friday.
