Manchester United’s hopes of adding another Brazilian to their engine room have been left in tatters as Wolverhampton Wanderers have struck a deal for Fluminense midfielder Andre.
HITC report that the Brazilian enforcer, dubbed “the next Casemiro”, who has long been reported to be on United’s radar, is on his way to Molineux with Wolves shelling out £21m for the player.
The Reds have bolstered their midfield options with Uruguayan destroyer Manuel Ugarte undergoing his medical earlier today ahead of a blockbuster transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.
And Andre was widely reported to be an alternative option should the Ugarte move fail to materialise, but after giving it the famous “Here we go!”, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the Uruguayan was always “option number 1, 2 and 3” for United.
Nevertheless, rumours persisted that there is scope for a further midfield addition, with Andre’s name mentioned as a possible extra body in the middle of the park.
Brazilian veteran Casemiro, who dragged United to a Carabao Cup trophy and third-place Premier League finish in his first season at the club, looked far past his prime last season.
And his poor form, alongside loanee Sofyan Amrabat’s failure to make his mark in Erik ten Hag’s side, made midfield reinforcements an inevitability.
Ugarte’s name quickly rose to the top, but as PSG played hardball on the price, Andre was mooted as a possible cheaper option.
His performances in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A caught the eyes of multiple clubs across Europe, particularly those in the Premier League.
Fulham were a possible destination, who were eying him to replace the Bayern Munich-bound Joao Palhinha, but they have since added former United target Sander Berge to their ranks, while Liverpool and Nottingham Forest were also credited with interest.
But it’s Gary O’Neil’s Black Country outfit who seem to have won the race for Andre’s signature. We can’t rule out further midfield reinforcements for United, who have just sold Scott McTominay to Napoli for £26m and Hannibal Mejbri to Burnley for £5.4m rising to £9.4m.
Christian Eriksen could also be shown the door before the transfer window slams shut, but there are no obvious names in the frame with the Red Devils more likely to strengthen up top or at left back.
