Former Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to officially score 900 goals.

The United legend scored his 800th goal in the red of United in 2021 in a victory against Arsenal but just three years later he has reached yet another milestone in a glittering career.

A move to Saudi Arabia in the 2022/2023 season has allowed him to press ahead in his goalscoring feats as he scored 50 goals in 51 appearances for Al Nassr and doesn’t seem to be slowing down as he has already found the net four times in four matches in this campaign.

His 900th goal however arrived for his national team as Portugal claimed a 2-1 victory over Croatia in the Nations League.

In the 34th minute of play, Ronaldo showed his predatory instinct and peeled away from his marker to slot in a cross from Nuno Mendes from close range.

After scoring, he sunk to his knees in tears, reflecting the emotion and relief of arriving to such a milestone that will possibly never be reached again.

He put in an all round positive display being given a score of 7.7 on Sofascore for his 88 minutes of action.

He had four shots in total and completed 96% of his passes, with three being categorised as key.

Speaking after the game Ronaldo commented on his achievement and claimed, “900 goals seems like any other milestone, but only I know how hard it is to work every day to score your 900th goal.”

“It’s a unique milestone in my career. I don’t break records… they haunt me!”

His goal was his 131st for Portugal as he extends his record as the top all-time goalscorer in male international football and the strike came 20 years after his first effort for his country.

The Portuguese legend is now 62 goals ahead of his eternal rival Lionel Messi in the all-time goalscoring charts and with the Argentine slowing down substantially of late, it doesn’t look like a record he will lose anytime soon.

Despite being 39 years old, Ronaldo is still starting regularly for his club side and country and will surely not rest until he has reached 1000 goals in football.

The former United number seven will also target a place in the 2026 World Cup despite the fact he will be well into his forties by the time the tournament begins.
