Liverpool manager Arn Slot says Trent Alexander-Arnold has always been a good defender, adding that he just needs to work on his “concentration”.
Alexander-Arnold said after Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth that he welcomed Slot’s criticism and hoped with the Dutchman’s help he could become a fearsome defender in Europe.
Slot was asked about Alexander-Arnold’s comments on Tuesday ahead of the Carabao Cup clash with West Ham.
“It’s nice to hear and read this because I think we all remember the day Jurgen left the club and what it meant to him,” Slot said. “To hear him say that about his new manager a few months later is great. It’s not always easy to come in and replace a manager like that.”
“The only thing I know is that we are talking about a player who has won the Champions League and the league. It is clear to me that he has been a good defender all his life. It is not about his ability to do things. It is more about his level of concentration.”
Liverpool have one of the best defensive records in the Premier League so far this season, having conceded just one goal, which came in the 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest earlier this month.
Slot said goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who is recovering from a hamstring injury, is aiming to return to action this week.
Alisson’s replacement, Caoimhin Kelleher, came on for him in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth and is set to keep his place against West Ham.
“Alisson is on his way to recovery but I think this game comes a bit early and we are looking forward to the weekend against Wolves but it will be tough. But he won’t be there tomorrow so Caoimhe will be in goal,” Slot said.
