Week 6 of the college football season brings another selection of meaningful uniforms that go deeper than the game.

The Michigan State Spartans will host the No. 6 ranked Oregon Ducks for the first time since 2018 in Friday night’s clash.

In their matchup against the Spartans, the Ducks will debut their new “Heroes” uniforms that support head coach Dan Lanning and his wife, Sophia. The uniform, made by Lanning, his wife and their three sons, tells the story of Sophia’s battle with bone cancer, which she beat in 2017.

Each member of the Lanning family played a specific role in designing the look.

Yellow, the official color for osteosarcoma awareness, represents Sofia’s fight against osteosarcoma on the jersey. Lanning’s older son, Caden, had the idea to put an ice cream cone on the uniform for the snacks the Lanning family ate after Sophia’s medical appointments. Titan, Lanning’s youngest son, thought of adding a multicolored look to the cleats to represent different groups of cancer patients.

Lanning’s contribution to the uniform is the molecular design on the gloves and sleeves that refers to the “Red Devil” chemotherapy treatment.

The diamond inlays on the shoulder wings and jerseys represent the journey and hope that transcends conditioning.

Design of the “Heroes” uniforms began in 2022, when Lanning was announced as the program’s head coach.

Here are college football’s best uniform combinations from Week 6.

Unique look

The 1989 Virginia Cavaliers cemented one of the best seasons in program history. With a 10–3 overall record, Virginia won the ACC Championship 48–21 over the Maryland Terrapins. In a showdown against ACC foe Boston College Eagles, the Cavaliers will don a throwback uniform to honor the 1989 team.

“El Cucho” is a nickname for the city of El Paso, Texas and a Mexican-Spanish dialect word from the word “pachuco” which represents unity and style in most cases. The UTEP Miners will wear their orange stripes over white pants with a special “El Chuco” helmet against the Sam Houston Bearcats.

The Air Force Falcons are paying tribute to the Air Force Special Operations Command with their Air Power Legacy Series uniforms as they take on Navy Midshipmen.

The threads contain details that shed light on the AFSOC mission. The helmet features the AFSOC insignia with the motto on the back: “Anywhere, Anytime, Anywhere.” The Special Tactics Combat Control motto “Be there first” is on the front of the helmet.

The jersey has a nameplate for the players name on the right chest. The left sleeve includes one of three badges denoting Air Force Special Tactics, along with an American flag. The red trim and accents on the uniform and pants are symbolic of the red beret worn by Special Tactics Combat Controllers.

difficult combination

The No. 3-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes have been on a roll, remaining undefeated on the season. They’ll take on the 3-1 Iowa Hawkeyes in Week 6 in style, featuring an all-gray combination with red lettering.

The Iowa State Cyclones have released several uniforms in the offseason, including one that will debut this week. Against the Baylor Bears on Saturday, the undefeated Cyclones will sport a clean all-white look with black lettering and gray trim.
