PBC made it official today for Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ title defense of his WBA lightweight belt against Lamont Roach for December 14th on Amazon Prime Video at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
There’s no word on the undercard for the Davis vs. Roach event, but it will have to be a good one to motivate fans to shell out $75.95 to order this on PPV. If Premier Boxing champions include David Benavidez vs. David Morrell for the co-feature, that would be a great value add.
Not surprisingly, the reaction from fans about the Tank-Roach fight today has been almost entirely negative, with people labeling it “Trash” and “cherry pick.” A few fans are in favor of the match, and they seem to feel that Roach (25-1-1, 10 KOs) will provide value. Those fans are greatly outnumbered, though by the ones that are talking down about the fight.
The fight was leaked ages ago, but now it’s official. What’s still to be revealed is the asking price for the PPV. That’s where the real backlash will come from the boxing public, with Tank Davis being vilified.
If Premier Boxing Champions want to make people happy, they’ll price the event in the $20 range or less to reflect its mismatch. That’s probably not going to happen. The likely price tag for the Tank-Roach event will be in the $75 range, and fans will have to take it or leave it.
It wouldn’t be a big deal for Tank Davis to be selecting another soft opponent if he’d been fighting quality opposition in his recent fights or any of them during his 11-year career for that matter. Unfortunately, Tank has been bottom-of-the-barrel opposition, padding his record and not taking any risks with his career.
