Charles Leclerc’s remarkable opening lap overtakes secured him his third victory of the season, as his team mate Carlos Sainz joined him on the podium with Max Verstappen slotting into third after a late battle with Lando Norris.

Ferrari successfully harnessed the strong pace they initially demonstrated during practice on Friday and, after Leclerc improved from P4 to P1 going into Turn 1, he established a dominant lead that remained in place for most of the race.

There was an enthralling tussle just behind for the final podium spot in the closing laps, with Norris making multiple attempts to pass his championship rival Verstappen as half a second separated the two.

The Briton eventually got the better of his competitor in a risky move that saw both go wide at Turn 12, leading to a five-second penalty for the McLaren driver.

Elsewhere, George Russell pulled off a magnificent comeback after he started from the pit lane, eventually crossing the line in P6 ahead of Sergio Perez, Nico Hulkenberg and rookies Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto.

It was a completely different story for the other half of the Mercedes garage after Lewis Hamilton spun off in the early stages and was forced to retire from a race he has historically excelled in.
