Manchester United’s attempts to sign Benjamin Sesko may be under threat as Arsenal are considering reaching a deal to sign the striker this January to fend off competition from other top European sides.
There have been reports of United being interested in the 21 year old since Erik ten Hag’s first summer at Old Trafford when they were heavily linked to him in 2022.
The Slovenian ended up staying one more year at Red Bull Salzburg before joining Red Bull Leipzig in the summer of 2023.
The Red Devils are thought to have maintained an interest in the forward and pursued him in the summer, settling for Joshua Zirkzee only when they realised they could not sign the powerful striker last window.
In fact, it has recently reported this month that United would be willing to part ways with Zirkzee after less than a year if it meant securing the services of Sesko.
The Slovenian international has continued to build his ever-growing reputation with six goals and three assists in ten matches this season, including three strikes in the Champions League.
However, United may face stiff competition from Premier League rivals which could put their plans to sign the youngster in a tailspin.
GiveMeSport report that “Arsenal could attempt to agree a deal for Benjamin Sesko in January ahead of eventually completing the move to the Emirates Stadium during the summer.”
Worryingly for United, “they have been given hope of reaching an agreement as his current employers are prepared to sanction his departure for in the region of £50 million.”
Sesko has recently signed a new deal with the Bundesliga club to strengthen their hand in negotiations but it is thought that his side will only ask for a “market-value” price and not hold back their star striker from moving to a bigger team.
Arsenal are not expected to be able to lure the player to come in January but there is a “verbal pact” that he can leave in the summer, which could open the door to a pre-agreement in the winter window.
And with the Gunners currently playing Champions League football and sitting third in the Premier League table, United may find it difficult to compete for the lethal attacker and will need to put forward a compelling case to whisk him away from Germany.
