For the first time, Special Olympics MENA hosted a regional competition dedicated to the Unified Champions Schools, bringing together young athletes and leaders from across the region to compete in… Uniform sports . This event is a testament to the dedication of UCS athletes, coaches and partners in promoting an inclusive culture. It has provided a platform where young people of all abilities can come together, form connections and showcase their skills in a supportive and enabling environment.
Another first was to bring together programs from across the MENA region to collaboratively expand the Unified Champions Schools initiatives. This event brought together existing UCS programs and newcomers, fostering an environment in which ideas, strategies and best practices are exchanged. The commitment to developing UCS in more communities has never been stronger, as programs across the region have pledged to expand opportunities for youth to participate in unified sports.
Launch of the first UCS Ambassador Initiative
In a pioneering move, Special Olympics MENA introduced the first regional UCS Ambassador Initiative, recruiting young leaders from Egypt , Morocco and United Arab Emirates To represent and champion the values of UCS. These Ambassadors, each with unique experiences and leadership qualities, are dedicated to promoting inclusivity and inspiring others in their communities. Through this initiative, these young leaders will continue to champion UCS values, motivate their peers, and help us build a more inclusive future.
This event also marks the first time that two regional events have been hosted within one unified school – the American University in Cairo (AUC). This unique collaboration underscores the exceptional support we receive from SO Egypt and the American University in Cairo, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting inclusivity within academic institutions. The success of this partnership exemplifies the power of local support in bringing UCS initiatives to life.
Programs with established UCS initiatives – including Egypt, Jordan Morocco and the United Arab Emirates – showcased the strength of their athletes through fierce and friendly competition. Programs in which you competed Basketball 3×3 With more than 20 unified champion schools representing those programs. These programs have pioneered UCS programming and provided inspiration to others through their commitment and success in unified sports. SO Benchmarks Middle East and North Africa: Impact across the region
As of July 2024, Special Olympics MENA includes more than 500 UCS initiatives, with more than 173,000 youth participating in UCS programs. Additionally, more than 1,900 teachers and coaches have been trained to promote inclusivity in their schools, and more than 15,100 partners and athletes are actively involved in unified sports. These numbers reflect the deep and growing impact of UCS across the region, creating communities where young people of all abilities are included and celebrated.
