WBA International Lightweight champion Floyd Schofield easily defeated Rene ‘El Bravo’ Tellez Giron though suffering a knockdown on Saturday night at The Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
In the co-main event, WBA Inter-Continental Super Middleweight champion Bektemir Melikuziev won a 12-round split decision over David ‘Dynamite’ Stevens.
Schofield (18-0, 12 KOs) defeated ‘El Bravo’ Rene Tellez Giron (20-4, 13 KOs) over 12 rounds.
In the first round, it was all about the taller and quicker Schofield. In the second round, Schofield changed to southpaw and had another easy round, with Giron on the receiving end throughout.
In the third round, there were wild punches by both, as Schofield claimed to get hit in the back of the head and turned his back on his opponent when Referee Thomas Taylor warned him. Giron may have pulled out the round.
In the fourth round, Schofield continued outworking Giron, who can’t seem to deal with Schofield’s hand speed. In the fifth round Giron kept up pressuring Schofield but was getting countered.
In the sixth round, both fighters were warned for hitting behind the head. Schofield is winning through the first half of the fight, but it isn’t a crowd-pleaser for the fans.
In the seventh round, Schofield continues switching from orthodox to southpaw, giving Giron a boxing lesson but warned by Referee Taylor for holding on one occasion.
In the eighth round, Schofield continues dominating Giron, who is very frustrated coming forward and walking into punches. In between rounds, Schofield’s father-trainer is very frustrated with him.
In the ninth round’s final thirty seconds, Schofield outlanded Giron and then grabbed him, getting warned by Referee Taylor. In the tenth round, Schofield seems frustrated that he cannot drop Giron.
In the eleventh round, Giron landed a left hook countering a Schofield miss, dropping Schofield for the first time in his career for an 8-count from referee Taylor.
In the twelfth and final round, Schofield continued dominating, though looking fatigued a bit as Giron never stops trying but completely dominated.
Scores 118-109, 118-109 and 116-111.
In the chief support bout, southpaw Meliluziev (15-1, 10 KOs) won a 12-round split decision over Stevens (14-2, 10 KOs).
In the first two rounds, Meliluziev had his way. In the third round, Stevens made a fight of it, pulling Meliluziev to the canvas in the final seconds.
In the fifth round, Stevens had Meliluziev’s nose bleeding easily, taking the round. From the sixth through the eighth rounds, Stevens had an edge, though close.
In the ninth round, Meliluziev was cut on the left eyebrow, knowing he was in a fight. In the tenth and eleventh rounds, Stevens seemed to have an edge.
In the twelfth and final round, Meliluziev did more than Stevens, who may need a stoppage.
The scores were 116-112 for Stevens, 118-110, and 117-111 for Meliluziev.
IBF World flyweight champion southpaw Gabriella ‘Sweet Poison’ Fundora (15-0, 7 KOs) unified the titles by stopping WBA, WBC, and WBO champ Gabriella ‘La Chucky’ Celeste Alaniz (15-2, 6 KOs) at 1:40 of the seventh round of a schedule 10 rounds.
In the first two rounds, the taller southpaw Fundora used her jab. In the third round, Alaniz came back, making a fight of it. In the fifth round, in the final seconds, Fundora knocked Alaniz’s head back with a lead left, but it wasn’t enough.
In the seventh round, Fundora dropped Alaniz with a left hand for an 8-count from referee Robert Hoyle. Seconds later, another left from Fundora and down again, forcing referee Hoyle to wave it off.
Welterweight Joel Iriarte (5-0, 5 KOs) stopped Xavier Madrid (5-6, 2 KOs) at 2:50 of the first round of a scheduled six rounds.
In the first round, Iriarte had Madrid in trouble early, and in the final minute, a right on the chin dropped Madrid when Referee Thomas Taylor waved it off.
WBA Super middleweight Darius ‘DFG’ Fulghum (12-0, 10 KOs) stopped southpaw Christopher Pearson (17-4-1, 12 KOs) at 1:02 of the third round of a scheduled ten rounds.
In the first round, Fulghum dropped Pearson for an 8-count in the final seconds. In the second round, Fulghum overwhelmed Pearson. In the third round, landing over half a dozen punches, Fulghum was declared the winner by referee Mike Ortega.
Bantamweight Jordan Fuentes (2-0) defeated Roberto Cantu Pina (4-5, 3 KOs) over four rounds. The scores were 40-36, 40-36, and 40-36.
Super featherweight Dalis Kaleiopue (6-0, 4 KOs) defeated Manuel Lerna (4-1) over six rounds.
The scores were 60-54, 60-54 and 60-54.
Featherweight Asa ‘Ace’ Stevens (7-0, 2 KOs) defeated Garen ‘Hellboy’ Diagan (10-5, 5 KOs) over six rounds.
