Head coach of Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles Rene Hake has spoken out on his imminent move to Manchester United in a coaching role.
United are currently undergoing an overhaul of their coaching department ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 season.
Benni McCarthy – whose contract expired on 30th June – is understood to have parted ways with the club. There is also uncertainty over the future of Erik ten Hag’s assistant, Mitchel van der Gaag.
Both McCarthy and Van der Gaag arrived at United with Ten Hag in the summer of 2022 but it appears their time with the club is already up.
The Red Devils have lined up Ruud van Nistelrooy and Hake to replace the two coaches. It’s believed that everything is done and all that’s left is an official announcement from the club to confirm the respective arrivals of Van Nistelrooy and Hake.
Late last month, Hake spoke to reporters and revealed his excitement at becoming the latest addition to Ten Hag’s backroom staff.
The Go Ahead Eagles gaffer said that the decision to complete a switch to Old Trafford was a no-brainer.
He once again spoke to Voetbal International (via Soccernews) and said, “The feeling I have is hard to describe, but of course, this is a great opportunity for me. Working in the biggest competition in the world, at one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
“It is also a great reward for myself. That I can go to the top of the world from Go Ahead Eagles is unique.”
The Dutchman added, “Of course I am grateful to Erik for this opportunity, but it is not about us knowing each other well. We just have to do a good job.”
“Erik has a role in mind for me, we have discussed that. As in every staff, all tasks are divided among the assistants.”
Hake was nominated for the Rinus Michels Award – a prize that is handed out annually to the best coach in the Eredivisie – after leading Go Ahead Eagles to a ninth-place finish, their best-ever in over 15 years.
The 52-year-old didn’t claim the accolade but the fact that he was considered is a testament to the incredible work he has done at Go Ahead Eagles over the last year.
