European giants Bayern Munich and Ajax are reportedly in a “tug of war” for Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and believe he will be relieved of his duties at Old Trafford very soon.
There is still a good chance that Ten Hag will be sacked as United boss due to the very poor and underwhelming season he has overseen.
With his future hanging in the balance, United remain strongly linked with a number of other managers.
With Bayern and Thomas Tuchel – who ironically is United’s target to potentially succeed Ten Hag – leaving, Bayern of course played their last game of the season on Saturday as they lost 4-2 at Hoffenheim.
The Bundesliga giants have struggled to find a suitable replacement for Tuchel and have faced multiple rejections from several top coaches.
Meanwhile, Ajax, who have been on a downward spiral since Ten Haag left Amsterdam to join United, are also looking for someone to take the hot seat.
Ajax were keen on Graham Potter, but negotiations broke down. According to Simon Mullock of The Mirror, the Eredivisie club are monitoring Ten Hag’s situation and could make a move for him if the opportunity arises. However, they will likely have to fend off competition from Bayern, but both teams believe the race is on.
“Erik ten Haag still courting Bayern Munich and Ajax as D-Day looms at Manchester United.”
“Both Bayern and former club Ajax believe the Dutchman will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season – even if United can pull off an FA Cup final shock victory by beating rivals Manchester City next Saturday.”
“Ajax are also in talks with Francesco Farioli, the Italian coach of Nice, the French club also owned by Ratcliffe. But they continue to monitor their former manager’s situation in Manchester.”
“Ten Haag also has a history with Bayern, having managed the German club’s reserve team when Pep Guardiola was in charge at the Allianz Arena.”
The paper adds that Ten Haag wants Sir Jim Ratcliffe to publicly back him and show his commitment by offering a new deal – something that has not been achieved so far.
Mullock also notes that Ten Haag may decide to leave and take on a new challenge if he feels that Ratcliffe and INEOS do not trust him.
