Former Manchester United academy player Alvaro Fernández Carreras has completed a cycle ride to the Galician city of Santiago de Compostela on his summer holiday.
The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Granada, but after seeing limited first-team opportunities, moved to Benfica in January.
Although he started slowly, the left back eventually gained the trust of his coach and played more and more towards the end of the season.
He scored his first senior goal in a 3-1 away win over Farense in April and played regularly in the final month of the season.
Fernandez’s good form has convinced Benfica to pay a potential €9 million to make his loan move from Old Trafford permanent, as they see him as an ideal back-up and the potential to be a long-term solution for the Eagles in that position.
The deal lasts until 2029, and it has a release clause of 50 million euros.
Regardless, United clearly still value the player as they have included three clauses in the contract that will “give them ultimate control over the player’s future, including a buy-out clause, matching rights and a sell-on clause”.
Bola reports that Fernandez is enjoying the break after a busy twelve months of football and relocation.
The left-back “showed up on social media with friends cycling, on the route that took him to Santiago de Compostela.”
He wrote on Instagram “Goal accomplished” and added several photos of his achievement.
The city of Santiago is culturally very relevant as the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral acts as the destination of the Way of St. James, the leading Catholic pilgrimage route since the 9th century.
The old town has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, like many Spanish cities, receives huge amounts of tourists every year.
