Manchester United have plans to strengthen in the middle of the park and replace the ageing legs of both Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

The duo were Erik ten Hag’s go-to partnership in his first season but last season, they struggled massively in the Dutchman’s high-transition style due to their lack of pace.

The Dane saw his minutes get drastically reduced after Kobbie Mainoo’s emergence which did not please him and he made his displeasure known to the manager.

One of his former clubs Ajax are reportedly open to a loan approach but with the Denmark international’s contract ending in 2025, the new co-owners are in no mood to allow the midfield ace to leave on a free.

Eriksen’s future

They want a permanent exit either this summer or in January and the chance to earn a profit from his sale considering the 32-year-old arrived as a free agent.

After the winter window, the former Tottenham Hotspur man will be free to agree a pre-contract agreement with any club of his choice, something the Red Devils are keen to avoid as they look to raise capital through player sales to fund the next spate of incomings.

According to Gazet van Antwerpen, Anderlecht “dream” of signing the midfield maestro and it would be considered the “stunt of the summer transfer market” if they can pull it of.

Eriksen is close with multiple people at the club and that could help facilitate a deal if the Belgian club decide to make their move this window.

Anderlecht eyeing Eriksen

“In Lotto Park, there is of course the Danish connection with Eriksen having a good relationship with Brian Riemer. After his heart attack at Euro 2020 and the insertion of his defibrillator, Eriksen found shelter at Brentford where Riemer was assistant at the time.

“The Danish international with 134 caps is also close to Jan Vertonghen with whom he played football at Tottenham and Ajax.”

Anderlecht are aware that the deal might happen towards the end of the window. Whether they will come up with a loan with an obligation to buy deal or an outright bid remains to be seen.

Eriksen certainly has the passing skills to take Anderlecht up a notch should he move there. The player is open to leaving but will not force the issue. The final call rests with Ten Hag.
