Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has claimed that this season is all about revenge for him.
The Cameroonian arrived to much fanfare last summer as he had come off the back of an incredible season at Inter Milan, where he was named as the 23rd best player in the world according to the Ballon d’Or ratings.
Unfortunately for the goalkeeper, he produced numerous error-strewn performances in his first months at the club and quite a few of these came on the very public stage of the Champions League.
Most damning of all were a couple of high profile errors against Galatasaray where the Red Devils threw away a two goal lead twice to draw 3-3 and all but end their chances of qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League.
Onana did go on to settle and proved to be a much safer pair of hands in the second half of the season. With a more stable backline plus the exciting addition of Leny Yoro, there is hope that he can hit much higher notes this coming season.
In a quick training ground interview in LA, he discussed his targets for the upcoming season and he confidently claimed, “to win everything! It’s a big revenge for me this season. So it’s going to be exciting.”
Elaborating on his comments he asserted that he had no point to prove as he is confident in his own ability and he knows who he is as a player and the only person he had anything to prove to was himself.
“I know where I come from. Coming to Manchester United as the best goalkeeper in the world, it was not the season I wanted. But this season I feel at home. Let’s see how it’s going to be.”
The 28 year old was also asked to comment on the changes to the centre back department and whether this will affect the team’s style of play.
Lisandro Martinez will likely play much more this season after last year’s injury hell, the supremely talented Yoro has been brought in and there are major links to a second centre back with the club involved in talks with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt.
Onana has already lavished praise on Leny Yoro after the game against Glasgow Rangers and spoke about his optimism about this season.
The former Ajax keeper expressed his confidence in the whole defensive squad by stating, “at the end of the day, it’s about being fit. If we had every player fit of course the season would have been way better. For me it doesn’t matter who we play, I trust my centre back, it doesn’t matter who is playing there. I’m very confident in all of them.”
