Ahead of Euro 2024, Liverpool and Scotland’s Andy Robertson has informed us of his ankle injury and revealed a text message sent by Jurgen Klopp.
Robertson goes to the European Championship as the captain of the Scottish team, which plays Germany in its first match.
He is set to step out at the Allianz Arena for the tournament opener having overcome a tough road to get there, with injury plaguing the final year of his career.
“(I’m) physically good, mentally good, looking forward to what lies ahead,” Robertson said.
“I’ve had an ankle injury since March and I’ve been nursing it a bit since then, but I’m feeling good. He’s in a good place now, we just didn’t want to make it more difficult.
“We were pretty relaxed about the whole situation. Maybe some others didn’t, probably especially my family before I could call them.
“But I’m ready. Mentally, physically, we are all ready and at the beginning we will be 100 percent.”
That ankle injury prevented Robertson from playing consistently for Liverpool during the spell, but the bigger injury of the season came earlier.
While playing against Spain in October 2023, Robertson was forced off with a shoulder injury that required surgery and kept him out until the end of January 2024.
Fortunately for Scotland, he is fit to play at the Euros, but his time with the team has not been entirely smooth sailing so far.
He left training in Scotland on Monday before assistant manager John Carver assured fans it was simply “precautionary”.
All that being said, he should lead his team as the starting left-back against Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany side on Friday night.
Robertson added: “We know what’s at stake. We have many incentives to do well, but one becomes that legendary team, which must drive us forward.
“We have great motivation, but it drives us forward. You never know what can happen in the knockout stages, but we have to get there first.”
A message from Jurgen Klopp
Last week, the Liverpool full-back set a new Scotland men’s national team record when he captained the side for the 49th time.
Klopp took note of the achievement and Robertson revealed that his former boss had sent him a congratulatory message. The Scot added: “It will be interesting to see who they’re rooting for tomorrow (Germany v Scotland).
“There’s only one answer to that – but I don’t need any of his advice. I hope he can enjoy the game, but not too much!”
After the game with Germany, Robertson will face Switzerland and Hungary to complete the group matches.
