Anthony Joshua’s clash with Daniel Dubois on September 21 could set a new British boxing attendance record after a request to extend the capacity at Wembley Stadium was approved.
The April 2021 fight between Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte is the current record holder after 94,000 people packed into Wembley that night.
The Riyadh Season card topped by Joshua and Dubois has already been declared a sell-out after the initial 90,000 tickets were snapped up.
But Turki Al-Alshikh confirmed that an application for a further 6,000 tickets has now been given the green light, which opens the door for a new record of 96,000.
The extra tickets will go on sale at midday on Friday, Al-Alshikh confirmed. He posted on X: “Our request to extend the capacity for a record boxing crowd at Wembley Stadium for the Joshua vs. Dubois fight at the #RiyadhSeasonCard Wembley Edition has been approved. Tickets will go on sale on Friday at 12pm UK time.”
The clash at the top of the bill will represent the first defence of Dubois’ IBF title, after he beat Filip Hrgovic for the interim belt in Saudi in June.
He was upgraded to full champion after it became clear that Oleksandr Usyk, the former title-holder, would not be facing Dubois. Instead, Usyk is set to fight Tyson Fury in their contracted rematch in December.
Dubois is yet to box at Wembley Stadium but challenger Joshua, the two-time world heavyweight champion, is no stranger to boxing beneath the arch having stopped both Alexander Povetkin and Wladimir Klitschko there already. Joshua also beat Joseph Parker and Carlos Takam in front of huge crowds at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
The 34-year-old is currently 28-3 with 25 knockouts and is on a four-fight winning streak since he lost to Oleksandr Usyk for the second time in August 2022.
Dubois, meanwhile, is 21-2 and in the form of his life after back-to-back inside distance wins against Jarrell Miller and Hrgovic since his defeat to Usyk in August 2023.
