James Butler hasn’t been implemented into the Hamilton Tiger-Cats offensive attack lately, and we anticipate that continuing when they play host to the Ontario rivals this weekend. Find out more below in Rohit Ponnaiya’s expert analysis.

The Toronto Argonauts face off against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in CFL action on Saturday.

Hamilton is eyeing its first win of the year, and my Argonauts vs. Tiger-Cats predictions for this Week 7 showdown expect the home team to lean on the passing game.

Here are my best free CFL picks for July 20.

Argonauts vs Tiger-Cats prediction

My best bet
James Butler Under 54.5 rushing yards (-114 at FanDuel)

My analysis

Although Hamilton Tiger-Cats running back James Butler exploded for 119 yards in the season opener, he’s been held in check since.

Butler was held to 27 yards on 12 carries in Week 2, and in the following game, he exited with an injury in the fourth quarter after tallying just 10 yards on five attempts. After missing Week 4 with that head injury, he returned to the lineup in Week 5 and racked up just 29 yards on nine rushes.

Entering the weekend, the Toronto Argonauts are holding opponents to just 59.2 rushing yards per game and 3.9 yards per carry — both good for second-best in the league.

The Ticats have leaned heavily on their aerial attack, passing on 73.9% of their downs — easily the highest mark in the CFL. Expect that trend to continue against an Argos stop unit that has been vulnerable through the air but stingy on the ground.

With Butler getting limited carries, expect him to be held below his rushing yards total.

Argonauts vs Tiger-Cats same-game parlay (SGP)

FanDuel Logo

James Butler Under 54.5 rushing yards

Cameron Dukes Under 248.5 passing yards

Tiger-Cats alt spread +7.5

With star quarterback Chad Kelly continuing to serve a lengthy suspension, Cameron Dukes has been under center for Toronto. While he threw for 254 yards in Week 1, he has failed to crack the 220-yard in four games since.

Dukes is generally accurate and makes solid decisions, but he can’t attack downfield. He’s averaging just 6.3 yards per attempt over his last three games, so his passing yards total for Saturday is way too high.

I was leaning towards the Ticats earlier this week at +5.5, but with this line moving under that key number of 3, I’m staying away from the spread. However, I do like the alternate spread option and moving Hamilton’s line past +7 for this SGP.

The Argos destroyed the previously unbeaten Alouettes last week, but going from the defending champs to the winless Ticats is a prime letdown spot. When you consider that Hamilton is playing at home fresh off a bye, the team should be competitive in this spot.
