Arne Slott arrives as Liverpool head coach with a strong squad that has exceeded expectations in 2023/24, but their form in the Premier League shows a key issue that needs to be addressed.

Jurgen Klopp was adamant he would not leave Liverpool until he felt he was leaving his successor with the team in top form.

Despite the setbacks, the 2023/24 campaign has shown that to be the case, with a midfield overhaul addressing the biggest personnel problem of a year ago.

Slott officially takes up his role on June 1 and the Dutchman is clearly eager to get to work with his new players when pre-season begins next month.

He and his staff will already be hard at work, having admitted they will be “watching a lot of games” from the season just gone as they examine Liverpool’s strengths and weaknesses.

One key area he will hope to address, of course, will be Liverpool’s habit of slow starts.

Based on the first half results alone, Liverpool would have finished the fifth in this season’s Premier League.

Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa would finish above Klopp’s team.

But Liverpool was champions when it comes to just the score in the second half.

Liverpool’s worst period when it came to finding the back of the net was in the Premier League 0-15 minuteswith only three achieved in that time.

Sheffield United are the only team to score fewer goals in the first 15 minutes of matches.

It is also the only period in which Liverpool have not scored more goals than they have conceded, with Brentford, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Wolves the only teams to have conceded more early goals than Liverpool’s eight.

In terms of their best goalscoring spell, the Reds were most prolific in between 76-90 minuteswith 27 goals scored – more than any other team – and 10 conceded.

Liverpool were tied with Luton for the last average minutes scored in the Premier League (56 minutes).

The difference between a champion and a challenger is often the ability to get ahead and stay ahead.

It shows when it comes to the total number of Liverpool games in which he conceded first, scoring the first goal in 16 of their 38 league games.

Six of them were at Anfield, and 10 away.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have conceded the first few times, eight in total, with five at home and three away. Man City have conceded first in 11 games, with three at home and eight away.

Manchester City led the game with a record 49.7 percent of the minutes, while Arsenal came second with 42.3 percent and Liverpool third with a much lower 34.2 percent.

Only West Ham (21 minutes) had an earlier average time of initial goals conceded than Liverpool (25 minutes).

However, Liverpool (1.5 PPG) trailed only Man City (1.82 PPG) in points per game scored when their opponents scored first.

Home and away

The difference in Liverpool’s form at Anfield and on the road was evident in their tendency to concede more often away from home than at home.

But it is summed up by the fact that, based on their just 19 results at home, Klopp’s side would finish cannon Premier League.

In away form, Liverpool was the best third best side in the league behind real champions Man City and runners-up Arsenal.

Only Newcastle (+1.06) had a higher difference per game between home and away form, with Liverpool earning +0.74 more points per game at home than away.
