For the first time in just under 20 years—you heard that right: 20 years—a St. Louis football team will be in the postseason. St. Louis has suffered through some awful football with the Cardinals and Rams, not to mention the former worst three-year streak in NFL history, but now their fans have finally been awarded for their perseverance. Not only will they be in the postseason, but the St. Louis Battlehawks will be hosting a playoff game for the first time since 2004.

The St. Louis Battlehawks will be hosting the San Antonio Brahmas at The Dome at America’s Center on June 9 at 6:00 PM CT. Ironically, this is the exact same matchup in the exact same location as what we saw in Week 10. The Battlehawks just barely squeaked by with a one-point lead as Brahmas kicker Ryan Santoso was unable to get the ball through the uprights to win the Brahmas the game.

As the game was home-field clinching for the victor, the outcome was able to save both teams a hefty sum in travel expenses.

The game was an offensive slog for St. Louis, for both sides, in fact, but it was a history maker nonetheless. To illustrate how long it’s been since St. Louis has hosted a game in the postseason, the youngest player on the Battlehawks roster, center Dohnovan West, was just two-years old.

The game, played on January 10, 2004 against the Carolina Panthers in the Divisional Round, was pervaded by the kind of gut-wrenching stuff that makes you never want to watch football again. Down by three with mere minutes to play, Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins spectacularly recovered his own onside kick to give St. Louis the chance to deal the killing blow. Driving into the red zone, instead of going for the game-winning touchdown, head coach Mike Martz bafflingly opted to run out over thirty seconds of clock to kick a field goal to tie the game.

What ensued in overtime was a missed field goal by Wilkins, quarterback Marc Bulger’s third interception of the day, and a 69-yard touchdown pass by the Panthers to end the Rams’ season. What no one knew at the time was that they were watching the death throes of The Greatest Show on Turf.

Where the Rams left painful endings, the Battlehawks now bring hope in their new beginnings. Head coach Anthony Becht is seeking to establish a winning culture and a new era on the same turf the Rams left behind just under a decade ago. With new turf ordered for next season, the last significant monument of the St. Louis Rams (save for the stadium itself) will be relegated to the dustbin of history. A new era, indeed.

Tickets for the game are set to go up at 10 AM CT on Monday, June 3. The Battlehawks have been must-watch football all season, and now the stakes are higher than ever. If you’re in the area, come to the game! Bring your friends! Bring your third cousin twice removed! Bring that regional manager you liked having as a boss all those years ago! Ticket prices are affordable and against an opponent like the Brahmas, the Battlehawks are going to need all the help they can get.
