Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has insisted that he and his teammates will do everything they can to ensure that they play entertaining football that will make fans happy.
Fernandes spoke to club media after United’s loss on penalties against Manchester City in the Community Shield.
A late equaliser from Bernardo Silva cancelled out Alejandro Garnacho’s opening strike just seven minutes earlier to ensure the match would be decided by a penalty shootout.
Pep Guardiola’s men ultimately prevailed, with Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans failing to convert their penalties.
Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positive to take from United’s performance at Wembley. The team created plenty of goalscoring opportunities but unfortunately, let themselves down by some poor finishing when it really mattered.
There were also some nice combinations and phases of play that left fans licking their lips ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 season.
Fernandes told MUTV that the Red Devils are determined to entertain their supporters in the new campaign and put last term’s struggles firmly behind them.
The club skipper said, “I think, when the season starts and you come back, there is always that excitement from yourself; I think we have been feeling that from the fans too.”
“Now it is on us [the players] to make that excitement stay with us. We have to keep creating these types of things, these types of moments to make the fans with us, because they come to the games to be entertained.”
“We want to entertain them and we want to win games because they want to see their team winning and there is no person in the world that wants to win more than everyone in that dressing room.”
“We are going to give everything to make the fans enjoy this season. We know that it was a really bad and tough season for them last season, as it was for us, so we want to make it different.”
Fernandes was asked whether United fell short against City because they had several players just returning from holiday following their involvement with their respective national teams.
The Portugal international emphasised that this was not an issue especially because City were also lacking a number of key stars.
“I think it was for both sides. They also had some players who just came back. That was not the issue.”
“It wasn’t about not being fit enough…everyone has been working.”
He said that United’s main aim was to win the Community Shield but because they did not succeed, the players will now turn their attention to improving and correcting the negatives identified vs. City.
