A Stacked Undercard

Fans on social media have sticker shock, as they expected a more reasonable price for the event, live on DAZN PPV. However, some exciting fights are packaged with the Canelo-Berlanga match. For $89.99, fans will get these great fights:

  • Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga; For Alvarez’s WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles
  • Erislandy Lara vs. Danny Garcia; For Lara’s WBA world middleweight title
  • Caleb Plant vs. Trevor McCumby; Super middleweight
  • Rolando Romero vs. Manuel Jaimes; Super lightweight
  • Stephen Fulton vs. Carlos Castro; Featherweight

The main argument fans have is that Berlanga has been rushed into the title shot Canelo without fighting anyone even halfway decent, but that’s how it’s done nowadays. Canelo’s last opponent, Jaime Munguia, earned the title shot fighting scrubs his entire 10-year career and barely beat 38-year-old Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

The Price of Premium Boxing

People paid $100 to see a washed-up, old Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight past his best, Manny Pacquiao, with a barebones undercard in 2015. So, fans shouldn’t be complaining about paying $90 to see Canelo fight the ambitious New Yorker Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) on September 14th.

Mayweather-Pacquiao was an awful fight, and there are no words to describe how poor the undercard that was thrown together for that card was. In comparison, Canelo vs. Berlanga provides great value.

Former IBF super middleweight champion Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) will fight the unbeaten McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) for the WBA interim belt. The winner of this fight could face Canelo next.

Fans haven’t seen former two-division world champion Danny Garcia (37-3, 21 KOs) for a couple of years, and he’ll be challenging Erislandy Lara (30-3-3, 18 KOs) for his WBA middleweight title. It would be impressive if Danny could dethrone the 41-year-old Lara after two years out of the ring.

The Spoiled Fanbase

It’s unclear what price fans expected for this card, but they must understand that an event like this will be a bit more expensive than average. If fans thought Canelo-Berlanga would be sold in the $70+ range, they were kidding themselves before there were too many excellent fights at the event to be priced that low.

Some people are spoiled by the events His Excellency Turki Alalshikh is putting on because he’s stacking his cards and pricing them in the $70+ range.
