Cougars AND Austin FC made their debut in League Cup and it was a crazy finish with one MLS team that played with one man less throughout the second half, and still managed to win as UNAM striker Guillermo Martínez had a chance to equalize but missed from the penalty spot, in final score 3-2.
The first goal of the match was scored in the 8th minute and Austin FC was the team that took the lead in the table. Alex Ring made a cross from outside the area and scored 1-0.
Before the end of the first half, Austin FC made the result 2-0 in 45′; Daniel Pereira stole the ball, dropped his wing and passed to Probably Zardeswho hit the ball against the post for the team’s second MLS goal.
But, Pumas reacted and in 45+4′, César Huerta sent a shot into the area and a pass went to. Ali Ávila, who finished and made the score 2-1. The game was reviewed in VAR and the referee approved the goal of the UNAM team.
Nine minutes into the second half, Ring sent a cross into the area and unmarked Sebastián Driussi finished for the Texas team’s third goal.
The Pumas tried, but they just couldn’t do it
Pumas continued the attack and in the 72nd minute Duarte sent a high and headed cross, The second goal was scored by Guillermo Martínez for the Liga MX club.
In the final moments, Huerta sent in a cross but took a shot from Julio Cascante and the referee called a goal kick. The whistler then reviewed the VAR and after seeing the screen, called a penalty in favor of the university team. From eleven steps, ‘Memote’ Martínez had the opportunity to equalize in three, but goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland saved.
Pumas next match in the League Cup is on Saturday 3 August against Rayados de Monterrey, while Austin gets a bye to analyze the next opponent.
