Never mind? A day after Georgia seemed to have a new quarterback, former UNLV starter Jayden Maiava changed his mind and will go to USC. That’s at least what his father told ESPN late on Tuesday night.

Maiava himself hasn’t announced it. The initial Georgia commitment was put out by Maiava’s NIL representation group, although the player did give at least one interview. It bears noting that Maiava said publicly he was staying at UNLV only to enter the portal, so maybe this isn’t final, at least until he enrolls at USC.

But if Georgia isn’t the destination, the Bulldogs are back to where they were before, which didn’t seem a terrible spot: Carson Beck the entrenched starter, backup Gunner Stockton entering his third year and freshman Ryan Puglisi as the third scholarship quarterback. Still, the reasoning for going after Maiava was for an experienced backup in case something happened to Beck, and competition for the starter once Beck leaves. That kind of player may not be available anymore in the portal, but Georgia will keep its eye open.
