Austin FC’s dreams were temporarily dashed by a commanding performance from the Colorado Rapids. In what promised to be a real spectacle, the Verde & Black fans watched helplessly as their side went down 2-0, facing an opponent who seemed to be in a state of grace.

From the opening minutes, it was clear that the night was not going to be easy for Austin FC. Brad Stuver, Austin’s reliable goalkeeper, made an impressive save in the third minute, preventing an even more disastrous start. Colorado’s relentless pressure quickly paid off. In the 22nd minute, Cole Bassett found the net after Omir Fernández’s accurate assist.

As the first half drew to a close, the Colorado Rapids nearly extended their lead. Once again, Brad Stuver prevented further damage with a monumental save in the 41st minute, keeping the score at 1-0. The Austin team entered the first half hoping to turn things around, knowing they had to adjust their strategy to contain the Rapids’ relentless offense.

The start of the second half brought renewed energy to Austin FC, but that hope quickly faded. Rafael Navarro, showing the guile and precision of an elite forward, scored Rapids’ second goal in the 49th minute, this time unassisted, just pure talent and opportunity. Down 2-0, Austin FC faced an increasingly steep mountain to climb.

One of the most controversial moments of the night came in the 59th minute when Sebastian Driussi’s long-range shot appeared to hit defender Lalas Abubakar on the hand inside the penalty area. Austin fans and players eagerly awaited a penalty that could change the dynamic of the game, but referee Malik Badawi decided not to award the penalty, prompting fierce protests from the Austin FC team.

They will return to Austin to face LAFC on Wednesday, June 19.
