Over the course of the ELF’s 2024 season, we’ve seen quite a bit of turnover at the quarterback position. Sometimes this is due to injuries, while in other cases it’s because of poor performance. With week seven in the books, we’ve now seen two more QB’s sign contracts. D’Angelo Fulford has been added to the Hamburg Sea Devils roster, while the Frankfurt Galaxy have signed Matthew McKay.

D’Angelo Fulford | Hamburg

D’Angelo Fulford is back in the ELF. He opened up the season with the Tirol Raiders, playing just two games with the team before being released. Fulford led the team to a 1-1 record, completing only 46% of his passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns, to one interception.

It was a strange dynamic in Tirol, though, as D’Angelo was released before he had time to truly gel with the team around him.

Fulford is an XFL alumni, having spent some time with the Vegas Vipers during the 2023 season. He also was with the MLFB in 2022 as one of their top prospects, prior to the league folding.

The Hamburg Sea Devils are looking for change. They released Javarian Smith, who started all five games this season. Smith threw for 1,055 yards and six touchdowns, to two interceptions. Right now the Sea Devils boast a 2-3 record – clearly needing to turn things around to make a potential playoff push. Now, the team is looking to D’Angelo Fulford, the former NCAA Champion at Mount Union, to get this organization on the right track.

Matthew McKay | Frankfurt

The Frankfurt Galaxy are in a similar boat, having gotten off to a start that isn’t ideal at 2-3. Their quarterback in Luke Zahradka went down with an injury this week, and has been placed on the injured reserve list.

In his place is Matthew McKay, who signs with the squad in hopes of getting some pro film and experience. McKay’s name is familiar, as he had originally signed a Letter of Intent with the San Antonio Brahmas prior to the USFL-XFL merger. When Hines Ward and his staff left San Antonio, McKay’s contract was dropped. This led to Matthew signing with the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks. He had been released in mid-May, and has remained a free agent since.

While he was a journeyman in college, McKay found a home at Elon during his senior season. In 2022, he threw for 2,709 yards and 21 touchdowns, adding 456 yards and three scores on the ground. McKay is a young, mobile quarterback with plenty of upside – and is someone who should be more than capable of providing a spark to this Frankfurt offense.

Final Thoughts

The talent in the ELF’s pool continues to get better from year to year. These latest additions are more examples of exactly that, with more Americans making the leap to playing internationally.
