Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries has decided to hold off on putting pen to paper on a new deal at the San Siro in the event that a move to Manchester United materialises, according to the reliable David Ornstein.

Dumfries has been linked to United on multiple occasions since Erik ten Hag’s managerial appointment in 2022 and the ongoing summer transfer window has not been any different.

Amidst uncertainty over Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future at Old Trafford, Dumfries has been mentioned as a player United could swoop in for to provide competition for Diogo Dalot.

It’s believed that a Wan-Bissaka-Dumfries swap deal was proposed by intermediaries to both clubs. Such an arrangement would make sense considering both stars have already entered the final 12 months of their contracts at their respective deals.

However, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Inter were not keen on such a transfer as they did not want Wan-Bissaka. It was also mentioned that the reigning Serie A champions were closing in on tying down Dumfries to fresh terms to extend his stay with them.

However, David Ornstein of The Athletic now reveals that Dumfries has held off on signing a new contract at least until the transfer window closes.

“Denzel Dumfries does not intend to engage in negotiations with Inter Milan over a new contract until the transfer window has closed.”

“The Netherlands international has entered the final 12 months of his deal at San Siro and Inter want to secure the 28-year-old right wing-back to fresh terms.”

“But as things stand he remains focused on a move elsewhere, with the possibility of joining Manchester United carrying particular appeal.”

“That would only be a potential option if Aaron Wan-Bissaka definitively rejects a switch to West Ham United — at present they have an agreement in principle with Manchester United, however personal terms are not yet in place. Wan-Bissaka favours the prospect of heading to Inter and that would open the chance of a Dumfries swap, which has so far been raised by intermediaries rather than between clubs.”

Ornstein adds that United’s preference is still to sell Wan-Bissaka to West Ham and then bring in Morocco international Noussair Mazraoui.

Talks remain ongoing with Bayern Munich in an effort to try and reach an agreement over Mazraoui’s transfer fee.
