Devin Haney has reportedly filed a lawsuit to sue Ryan Garcia over his positive drug test for their fight last April in New York. Haney wants punitive damages.
According to Boxing Scene, the lawsuit alleged that Ryan committed “battery, fraud, and unjust enrichment.” Also, Haney’s defeat caused a loss of reputation and future earnings. The loss of reputation could result in Haney losing out on millions.
It’s pretty obvious that Haney isn’t viewed the same by fans after his loss. He’s been ridiculed and viewed as damaged goods, and someone that was never that good to begin with.
It’s unclear whether the lawsuit will be successful or not, and whether will bring in the kind of money that Haney would receive if he hadn’t been beaten. To continue to do well finally for the remainder of Haney’s career, he’s got to defeat top-level guys, and it’s questionable whether he can based on that performance.
Haney Wants Rematch With Ryan: Will he Get It?
Interestingly, Haney still wants a rematch despite the lawsuit. That might not work, but we’ll see. Will Ryan fight Haney again after this? There will be a lot of money for Ryan to make fighting Haney again, but if he fears that he’s going to be sued for various things afterward, he might be hesitant to do so. If you’re Ryan Garcia, you say, ‘Drop the lawsuit, and I’ll give you a rematch. If not, no second fight.’
That would mean that Haney’s lawsuit that he’s conducting now will actually undermine him rather than bring in the riches that a rematch would bring him.
Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) tested positive for a banned substance, Ostarine, after defeating Haney by a 12-round majority decision at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The outcome was later reversed, and the New York State Athletic Commission ruled a no-contest, and Ryan was suspended and fined. However, many fans still view Haney as having lost.
Haney’s popularity with many fans on social media has since taken a nosedive from that loss, who view him as having been exposed. If Haney successfully sues Garcia, will he be interested in fighting him again if he thinks he may turn to the courts again if things don’t go his way?
The clown Ryan Garcia whole boxing career is manufactured
when that time came to become a champion he was scared and cheated. Keep talking punk but you will continue to pay for being a drug cheat. 💰#AndStillUndefeated pic.twitter.com/SVIA5fKeLg— Bill Haney (@BillHaney77) September 20, 2024
