Ahead of Portugal kicking off their Euro 2024 campaign against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot says he is in the best moment of his career.

The United right-back has enjoyed a successful season despite a sea of poor players around him.

He won the player of the season award and played 50 games in all competitions, his last being the victory in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

However, Dalot’s career at United was not always plain sailing as he looked set to be sold at various times and was sent on loan to AC Milan in 2021.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Portugal’s first game (via O Jogo ), he was asked if he was in the best form of his career, and he replied: “I think so, individually.”

“My career has progressed. I’m not hiding that it’s a good moment, maybe the best in my career. But it’s worth it.”

“If I don’t continue to demonstrate that I deserve to play… The work continues, day in and day out, in the same way so that I can continue with the level of fitness that I have demonstrated.”

The defender already stated earlier in the season that this was the best level of performance in his career.

Dalot’s character has so impressed Carrington that he is reportedly being talked about as a potential future club captain. Elaborating on what it meant to be recognized by his teammates as the best player of the season, he said: “Individual trophies are always positive, in my case it gives me more confidence, more motivation.”

“This recognition from my colleagues, from those who see me every day, from those with whom I suffer and celebrate was great. It is a special recognition.”

Asked if his good club form would translate into a starting place for the national team, he said that of course club form “can play a fundamental role” but that does not guarantee he will start as the 25-year-old believes Portugal have plenty of strength in depth.

At the end, he commented that “it would be a dream” to lift the Euro trophy with the national team and that his team would “give everything” to try to make it come true.
