Hungary may have lost their Euro 2024 opener to Switzerland on Saturday, but Dominik Soboszlai and his team-mates united their fans after the game.
Szoboszlai assisted Barnabas Varga to give Hungary hope late on in their Group A opener, but despite coming back to 2-1 down, they conceded again for a 3-1 defeat.
It’s been a tough start to the tournament for the side who ended their 14-game unbeaten run in warm-up friendlies, but they can still hope to progress to the knockout stages.
To do that, they will need the support of their support – and they remain united with the players as the scenes after the match in Cologne showed.
After their defeat, captain Szoboszlai led his teammates to the Hungarian fans, standing in front of the ultras section as they sang their national anthem.
A rendition of the National Anthem was observed as players and fans held their hands to their hearts and emotions were painted on their faces.
Szoboszlai was appointed captain of his country back in 2022 and has maintained this custom after the match while holding the armband until now.
Hungary’s next game at Euro 2024 is against hosts Germany on Wednesday night, and a result in that tie is likely to be needed if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.
Due to the 24 teams competing in the tournament, four of the six teams that finish third in their groups will advance to the knockout stages.
That will determine their points tally from the group stage, with Hungary bottom of the current third-placed table with an inferior goal difference to Albania, who themselves lost 2-1 to Italy.
