Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hinted that Mason Mount may have picked up an injury during his side’s 2-1 loss at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Brighton took the lead in the first half courtesy of Danny Welbeck, who took advantage of some poor defending from United to beat Andre Onana from close range.

Amad Diallo restored parity for the Red Devils, who steadily grew into the game. Alejandro Garnacho thought he had won it for United after he tapped the ball in but his goal was ruled out after the referee judged that Joshua Zirkee – who was offside – got the final touch.

It appeared that the match would end in a draw but the Seagulls had other ideas.

Joao Pedro found himself unmarked at the far post with plenty of time and space, and he made no mistake as he converted a cross to deny United a share of the points.

After the final whistle, Ten Hag spoke to TNT and gave his verdict on the Reds’ performance.

The United boss also gave an injury update on Mount, who he took off at the interval and replaced with Joshua Zirkzee.

TNT asked the Dutchman whether Mount’s substitution for Zirkzee was a tactical decision or a forced one due to injury. He replied, “It was a decision, he had some problems, he had an issue, so we know the history of Mason, so there are four weeks to come out.”

“But I think, also, Joshua is coming better in, we are losing the game, and I think he had a good impact in the game.”

On United’s display, Ten Hag remarked, “But I don’t think also before half time we created our chances, we had a good chance, so the best chance before half time.”

“I think that was from Amad and was after the cross of Diogo [Dalot], and also after that Mason Mount had a very good chance.”

“So I think before halftime we had three, four, I think, good opportunities, and from there two very good chances, and we should go winning at half-time.”

He added, “If you protect the goal like we do, and then you drop points.”

“Football talks to us about details, as I say, so we have to do better in such occasions.”

It doesn’t get easier for United, whose next assignment just before the international break is against Arne Slot’s Liverpool team.
