Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted he will continue playing for Portugal after their painful exit from Euro 2024.

Ronaldo started in all five of Portugal’s matches at the tournament in Germany, averaging 97 minutes per game.

But for the first time in his career, the Al-Nassr striker failed to score from open play in a major international tournament.

Portugal’s captain broke his silence on social media after Friday’s 5-3 quarter-final defeat to France on penalties: “We wanted more. We deserved more. For us. For each and every one of you. For Portugal.”

“We are grateful for everything you have given us and everything we have achieved so far. On and off the pitch, I am sure this legacy will be honoured and will continue to be built together.”

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said after his team’s exit from the tournament that it was “too early” to say whether Ronaldo had played his last game for his country.

Ronaldo has scored 130 goals in 212 appearances for Portugal since making his national team debut in 2003 and won Euro 2016. He has already indicated that his record-breaking sixth European Championship will be his last.

It remains to be seen whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue playing until the 2026 World Cup at the age of 41.

Portugal return to action on September 5 when they face Croatia in their opening Nations League Group A match.
